BRAIN CELLS: THINKING IN COLOR
This series is rooted in a remarkable archive of brain cell photographs gifted to me by a Yale neurobiologist shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. These delicate, branching forms, first used in my Covid Variations series, become here a more intimate meditation on thought, perception, and resilience.
By isolating individual brain cells and digitally transforming them, I highlight their inherent beauty and metaphorical potential. Some remain starkly black and white, emphasizing contrast, structure, and the elegance of natural design. Others are saturated with layered color, evoking emotion, memory, and the unpredictable energy of cognition. Seen together, they suggest two modes of mind: logic and clarity on one side; imagination and vitality on the other.
The Brain Cells series moves beyond documentation to reframe science as a source of wonder, vulnerability, and human meaning. Brain cells, to me, are exquisite maps of consciousness. They are visual traces of curiosity, memory, and imagination. All works are 8.5” x 11” and available as giclée prints in a variety of sizes.
