COVID VARIATIONS

PANDEMIC is a 48 x 116 inch collage created from hundreds of brain cell photographs. These photographs were cut into fragments, then pasted together. Horizontal and vertical masking tape divide the collage into map-sized grids. Black masking tape markers indicate the major places where Covid 19 was detected. The red tape indicates the areas where Covid is no longer present. The black, white, and gray photographs represent people of all colors and backgrounds. In its entirety, Covid Variations infers that people of all nationalities must work together to rid this country and the world of this insistent plague.

RECOVERY (previously DR. FAUCI’S DREAM) is an 83 x 61 inch canvas-backed collage. Its bottom section repeats the brain cell Pandemic collage described above. Brightly colored segments in the middle section of this collage are drawn away from the earth to the sun/flower/clock at the upper most portion of the canvas. The sun/flower/clock implies that in time this pandemic will expire.

PANDORA’S BOX 20/23 is a 20 x 20 inch box, painted red on the outside, is covered on its interior and on its four upper flaps with brain cell photographs. This box’s inside is also covered with the same brain cell photographs. Black tape segments represent the locations where Covid is present; the masking tape needs no explanation. Their placement in the box’s interior indicates Covid contagions are fleeing from the box.

The box’s flaps list the world’s evils that, in the Greek mythological story, escaped from Pandora’s Box: greed, envy, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, death. Besides these tribulations, the flaps also include evils in the world we live in today: guns, war, riots, climate change, isolation and more.

The only word left inside the Pandora’s Box of old was HOPE. THE Covid  box’s interior also projects the word HOPE, but this word emanates from a contemporary LED light fixture.

TIME CAPSULE,  (42 x 42 x 4 inches) with its plethora of images, summarizes social, political, and cultural issues that continue to make  newspaper headlines  from 2020-2023.

DOUBLE VISION is a two-sided artwork on .Plexiglas. One side is labeled 20/23. It is covered with somber black and grey toned painted CDs.  Its colors reflect the bleak atmosphere caused by Covid.

On side 2023, the CDs’ shimmering effects and intense middle red circles reflect the anticipated joy in the impending dissemination of vaccines that promise a more normal way of life. Double Vision artwork is 48 x 32 inches without its stand; 63 x 36 inches with its stand.

NOT A PIECE OF CAKE This cake is frosted with tacks, a rope, and syringe. The maze on its top illustrates the route needed to disarm Covid. A syringe celebrates the  vaccine’s availability; the candle, the Pandemic’s end.

CHAOS 2023 is created from brain cell photographs that were cut and pasted into a central shape with extending flailing body parts. This construction was then treated with paints, crayons, India inks. Its title says it all.
