LIFE CYCLE
Life Cycle is a four-part interdisciplinary installation that investigates the aesthetic and conceptual intersections between visual art, choral music, and medical imaging technologies. The series is comprised of four illuminated collages: Overture, Life, Death, and Variations on a Theme. Each collage is displayed on a separate light box salvaged from a commercial photographic printer. The repurposing of this equipment is integral to the work, reflecting my sustained interest in the historical and material relationship between radiography and photography.
Each collage incorporates fragments from musical scores I have sung from while performing with The New Haven Chorale. These embedded notations, drawn from compositions by Bernstein (Chichester Psalms), Haydn (Creation), Brahms (Requiem), and Barnett (The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass) resonate thematically with the title and emotional register of each panel. The musical references function not only as personal artifacts but as formal devices, reinforcing the structural parallels between musical and visual composition.
The works are constructed from a wide range of materials, including human and animal radiographs, X-rays of DNA sequencing gels, cellular growth studies, medical research imagery, canvas, India inks, oil sticks, photography tape, and surgical suturing materials. These layered elements are assembled into 48-inch horizontal panels that examine and compare the shared visual grammars of anatomy and notation: line, rhythm, pattern, repetition, and gesture.
The installation is further extended by large-scale colorized prints of each collage installed on the gallery walls. A sound component featuring the corresponding musical works immerses the viewer in a multisensory reflection on the biological and metaphysical dimensions of the human life cycle.
